The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its 2026 nominees for excellence in Costume Design, Production Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling on January 22.
On Thursday, January 22, the 2026 Oscar nominations were released live on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences YouTube channel by actors Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman. Academy voting will commence on February 26 and conclude a week later on March 5, with the 98th Academy Awards Ceremony held on March 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, its venue since 2001.
2025 was a standout year for auteur filmmaking, with significant buzz surrounding Ryan Coogler's original screenplay "Sinners," Josh Safdie’s “Marty Supreme,” and Paul Thomas Anderson’s Thomas Pynchon adaptation, “One Battle After Another.” The three star-studded films have emerged as frontrunners for Best Picture and Best Actor. “Hamnet,” Chloé Zhao’s meditation on grief, is also in the running for Best Picture, with its leading lady, Jessie Buckley in the running for Best Actress, while “Sentimental Value” star Stellan Skarsgård is poised to potentially become the first Best Supporting Actor winner for an international film. Alongside these high-profile contenders, The Set Set turns its focus to the creative forces behind 2025’s most striking and celebrated on-screen sets and looks.
The Academy Award for Best Costume is a stacked race between Deborah L. Scott of “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” Malgosia Turzanska of “Hamnet,” Kate Hawley of “Frankenstein,” Miyako Bellizzi of “Marty Supreme,” and Ruth E. Carter of “Sinners.” On the fashion front, Paul Tazewell—who won his first Oscar last year for “Wicked”—has been left out of the race for the film’s second installment, “Wicked: For Good.” For makeup and hairstyling, Mike Hill of “Frankenstein” and Kazu Hiro of “The Smashing Machine” are competing against Japanese historical drama, “Kokuho,” and a Norwegian body horror film “The Ugly Stepsister” for the award. And as for production design, drawing directly from the Best Picture nominees we have “Frankenstein,” “Hamnet,” “Marty Supreme,” “One Battle After Another,” and “Sinners” neck-in-neck.
