Ruth E. Carter
Ruth E. Carter is a trailblazing, two-time Academy Award–winning American costume designer whose work has reshaped visual storytelling and expanded representation on screen. She made history as the first Black person to win the Oscar for Best Costume Design for "Black Panther," also earning Marvel Studios its first Academy Award. She repeated that achievement with its sequel, becoming the first Black woman to win multiple Oscars in any category and the first costume designer honored for both a film and its sequel. With more than three decades of experience and over 70 credits across film, television, and theater, Carter has collaborated with directors including Spike Lee, Steven Spielberg, Ava DuVernay, and Ryan Coogler. Her extensive filmography includes "Do the Right Thing," "Malcolm X," "Amistad," "Selma," "Dolemite Is My Name," "Coming 2 America," the "Black Panther" franchise, and "Sinners." Her work consistently enriches stories centered on Black history and culture, establishing her as a leading voice in period design and Afro aesthetics.
