Pretty things come in small packages, and very, very large cinematic releases. This Valentine’s Day eve, Emerald Fennell’s highly anticipated “Wuthering Heights” hits theaters, and the internet is abuzz in anticipation. The film marks Fennell’s directorial follow-up to “Saltburn”—an original screenplay that took audiences by surprise with its fully-realized aesthetic and Barry Keoghan raunchiness—and promises to deliver the heat in time for Valentine's Day. With costumes by Jacqueline Durran (“Little Women,” “Jay Kelly”), makeup by Siân Miller (“Saltburn,” “Cyrano”), and production design by Suzie Davies (“Saltburn,” “Conclave”), this new adaptation offers more than just sexual chemistry, spotlighting a holy trinity of below-the-line talent.
Rather than produce a by-the-books adaptation of Emily Brontë’s 1847 novel, Fennell has taken a handful of stylistic liberties with the costumes, casting, and plotline of her film. Fennell’s interpretation—conspicuously titled in quotes to reflect its deviation from the source material—centers around Catherine Earnshaw (Margot Robbie) and Heathcliff’s (Jacob Elordi) feverish obsession with one another. And while it's easy to fixate on the Australian power-duo—who continue to deliver show-stopping outfits for the film’s international premiere rollout—the film has given us lots to obsess over outside of its actors. With the help of two-time Oscar winner Durran, “Wuthering Heights” has created an operatic blend of gothic romance and campy theatricality, with costumes more reminiscent of Durran’s work on “Barbie” than any of the period pieces she’s worked on.
For those of you who were hoping for a more tangible gift this February 14th, The Set Set has compiled a list of “Wuthering Heights”-inspired gift ideas inspired by the film’s costumes, set design, and press tour… in all of its fantastical period inaccuracy. From the official rings exchanged between Robbie and Elordi on set and a Charli XCX collector's vinyl to inspired silk corsets, our list is exhaustive. So send a link to your partner, galentine, or family (no judgment here!) if you, too are inspired by the film’s campy gothic corsets and seven-figure bedazzled chokers.
Official Merch
For the diehard fan, who may or may not be in a few TikTok op-eds too deep, we recommend opting for one of the film’s official brand collaborations. Bloomingdale’s in-house brand Aqua released a capsule collection of clothing and jewelry inspired by the film’s aesthetic, including this cami nightgown that can be styled in and out of the house. Or, for the Charli XCX fan in your life, snag the collector’s edition vinyl adorned in doily.
Inspired Fashion & Intimates
In the spirit of Emerald Fennell, skip the subtle and opt for something a bit more theatrical on the fashion front: a silk blindfold, tulle opera gloves, or a pendant choker inspired by Robbie’s press tour looks. Embracing method dressing—a strategy implemented during the "Barbie" rollout, and later emulated by Timothee Chalamet for “Marty Supreme”—Robbie has leaned fully into gothic romanticism on the international circuit.
Jewelry
If the "Wuthering Heights" press tour has taught us anything, ornate, over-the-top costume jewelry is in. At the film's Los Angeles premiere, Robbie appeared in the Taj Mahal diamond necklace, a Mughal-era jewel once worn by Elizabeth Taylor. We’ve rounded up affordable dupes inspired by the iconic piece, so you can capture the drama without selling your house.
Beauty
To create Robbie's character's flushed, windswept moor-wandering makeup, Siân Miller leaned on rose tones and natural beauty, with interchangeable lip and cheek products. Recreate Cathy's lovesick look with the exact products used by Miller on set: cream blushes tapped high on the cheekbones, a balmy rose lip, and skin-enhancing formulas that let your natural texture shine through. Anything rose-hued and balmy should do the trick.
Homeware
For the person who has everything, these offbeat options deliver an element of playful surprise inspired by Suzie Davies’ set design and the original Brontë text. One can never go wrong gifting a classic literature, especially when it's bound in cloth with an adorable floral cover, so we suggest gifting this special edition copy of “Wuthering Heights” from Penguin Random House. Alternatively, opt for a cement candle holder, inspired by a set piece in Thrushcross Grange, or a wonderfully whimsical jelly candle.
