On-screen outerwear and coats to inspire your fall wardrobe
Fashion
A chill in the air means only one thing: it’s time to make the wardrobe rotation and consider the coats you’ll adopt for the colder months. From ever-faithful trenchs and cashmere coats, to fresh iterations of puffer jackets, blazers, and biker jackets, you can be sure to find some inspiration on screen.
‘The Woman In Cabin 10’
In this murder-mystery movie, British star Keira Knightley plays Laura Blacklock, a journalist who’s given an assignment that happens to be on a super yacht. She boards the boat unaware of the etiquette and attire required, wearing a wool blazer paired with a knit vest and jeans, then later on, overdoes it in a sequinned evening dress for an informal dinner. A breezy sail calls for warm layers and many characters don earthy tones and heritage outerwear, from Laura’s chic, checked coat, to Heidi’s (Hannah Waddingham) double-breasted military-style wool coat; Richard Bullmer (Guy Pearce) in a brown suede jacket, and photographer Ben Morgan (David Ajala) in a wool overshirt jacket. For his terminally ill daughter Anne Bullmer (Lisa Loven Kongsli), it’s understated styles in luxurious fabrics: a belted jacket or cashmere coat and sheepskin hat, while later on in the movie, we see more garish styles reveal themselves from Heidi’s metallic longline Dries Van Noten coat and a studded leather shacket worn by Grace (Kaya Scodelario).

'Bugonia'
In Yorgos Lanthimos’ satirical psychological thriller, “Bugonia,” Michelle (Emma Stone), a high-powered pharma CEO, keeps a tight capsule wardrobe of the same black skirt suit, white starched shirt, and towering pumps — topped off with a trench coat in one of fall 2025's hottest shades. She’s wearing her uniform when kidnapped by conspiracy theorists who think she’s an alien determined to destroy earth, and keeps her trench on even after she's stripped of her power suit (not to mention her hair). In fittings with Stone, costume designer Jennifer Johnson told The Set Set that she experimented with various silhouettes: “a classic” Macintosh style, power-shouldered '90s trenches, and “really exaggerated shapes” from contemporary Saint Laurent collections. In the end, she had nine versions of the wine-hued trench custom made from a bonded fabric sourced from Italy, however, there are plenty of options to choose from this season that don't require having a Milanese tailor on speed dial.
'Black Rabbit'
"Black Rabbit" is a show that delivers on the drama: there are gunpoint robberies, love triangles, and financial ruin, served with a clever juxtaposition of styles, curated by costume designer Amy Westcott. Protagonist Jake (Jude Law) plays a restaurateur and businessman with expensive taste; his Rolex watch and a cashmere coat — which he is later forced to pawn to scrape some urgent cash together — is the total opposite of his brother Vince’s (Jason Bateman) rough-and-ready style. Meanwhile, Jacke's business partner, Roxie (Amaka Okafor), wears a bold red vintage Marc Jacobs jacket when shopping at the fish market — a nod to Noughties style, while interior designer and love interest Estelle (Cleopatra Coleman) and her rising star boyfriend Wes’ (Sopé Dìrísù) outfits shout louder than the rest, dripping in Gucci cardigans, faux fur coats and expensive sneakers.

'The Morning Show'
For those looking to take things up a notch, “The Morning Show” provides plenty of luxury options, from Alex (Jennifer Aniston) whose tailored blazers are fit for any workwear wardrobe, to Bradley (Reese Witherspoon), who goes for a more approachable look in AllSaints Vera leather jacket. But the true star for standout style comes from CEO Stella Bak (Greta Lee), who brings experimental tailoring and streetwear to the forefront, with styles like a sleeveless tailored coat and a varsity bomber jacket, both by Japanese brand Sacai. Then there's Celine, played by Marion Cotillard in a cameo appearance, who wears a sheer Dolce & Gabbana trench coat — now that’s one fine way to show off the outerwear and outfit beneath.

'Wednesday'
Whether you're a Tim Burton fan or a Netflix scroller, no one can escape the global popularity of "Wednesday" — or its influence on fall fashion. Curated by Colleen Atwood, the standout costumes stem from mother-daughter duo Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and our titular heroine (Jenny Ortega), the latter of whom's gothic aesthetic derives from black, leather, and macabre-inspired styles, finessed with accessories to make her the perfect moody muse for fall and beyond. One look that stands out in the new season is a Houndstooth cape coat that Wednesday wears as she sets out to track down a murdered former private investigator. A cropped button-up leather jacket and a sleeveless vinyl puffer for colder days also feature in Wednesday's wardrobe. Then there's also Wednesday's best friend and roommate, Enid (Emma Myers), who embodies all bright and soft in her pastel pink jacket. As for season two newcomer, Isadora Capri (Billie Piper), she stands out from the crowd in a rust satin Tom Ford jacket.
'Only Murders In the Building'
If you want to give life to a grey, mundane day, look to the main character of “Only Murders In The Building.” Mabel (Selena Gomez) showcases bold looks throughout the series, from shiny leathers to tactile fuzzy coats and brightly colored sweaters. The costume design by Dana Covarrubias — who previously explained that her concept was that her costumes were a type of armor — features statement-making outerwear heavily throughout the show, from a striped trench coat to a studded jacket and orange faux fur coat.

‘And Just Like That…’
Other, not-so-subtle choices to brighten any coat collection come from “And Just Like That …” Whether it’s high-end Chanel-style jackets and designer pea coats worn by Charlotte (Kristin Davis), or the more wacky choices we see once in a blue moon, like Mia’s (Ella Stiller) purple denim jacket, the fashion-led series has it all. For those who want something more quiet luxury, look to Miranda’s (Cynthia Nixon) MM6 Cacoon coat, available in many iterations online.
'The Girlfriend'
Finally, we couldn’t not mention the series that’s got everyone talking: “The Girlfriend, with its display of egregious family wealth, brings a whole host of fashion for all ages. Laura (Robin Wright) wears minimal-yet-reeking-of-rich cashmere coats, which contrast with Cherry’s (Olivia Cooke) stand-out vintage Vivienne Westwood blazers.
