Makeup artist Liz Rowe and hairstylist Chrystal Lotz share insider secrets to creating Camila Morrone's lived-in beauty look for Netflix's newest horror drama.
In “Something Very Bad is Going to Happen,” Camila Morrone transforms into a superstitious bride in the lead-up to her wedding. What reads to the viewer as an effortless, lived-in beauty—smudged brown eyeliner, visible freckles, and wash-and-wear locks—is the product of meticulous preparation and design by makeup artist Liz Rowe and hairstylist Chrystal Lotz. To create Rachel’s signature “undone” appearance, the hair and makeup duo worked in tandem using a curated array of “natural” looking products.

“We had a lot of conversations early on about the effortlessness of the look overall for Cami,” Lotz says. “They wanted [the lead duo] to look like they'd sort of skipped the hair and makeup trailer, which, as we know in film and television, is not possible.” To achieve the vision of pared-back beauty, the duo looked for inspiration outside the confines of already existing characters. With the exception of Dylan Gelula in “Dream Scenario”—who Lotz herself styled—no celebrities made it onto the moodboard. Instead, Morrone’s strong facial features and healthy head of hair set the tone for her character’s look. “Makeup-wise, her look is really all about beautiful skin, a really subtle contour, not a bronzer, definitely a cool tone contour, and a great enhancement of your natural lip,” Rowe says. “If they focus on those, they can really emulate Rachel's look pretty easily because it was so effortless.”

Rowe set out to suggest Rachel had slept in her makeup, with traces of last night’s eyeliner—Victoria Beckham’s Cocoa—informing the next morning’s look. Ironically, the key to pulling off a “no-makeup” makeup look is fostering a healthy base. In other words, if you want to look like you just slept in your makeup, but better, you actually have to take it off first.
Since the show released on Netflix last month, Rowe’s direct messages on social media have been flooded with inquiries about Rachel’s exact lip combination. With today’s oversaturation of lip filler and overlining, Rowe aimed to accentuate what was already there with Morrone. “Lip contouring is a really big thing that's coming up, even using a little bit of your contour to really define the cupid's bow and like the center of the bottom lip, as well as then using a liner to really overline and then accentuate and pull down,” Rowe says. “But staying on the outer corners within your lips is a really flattering way to do your lips, especially in this age where everyone's over-drawing.” In between scenes, Rowe applied lip balm to keep Morrone’s lips healthy and hydrated.

As a professional hair stylist, Lotz is acutely aware of the toll filming takes on actors’ hair. With Morrone, Lotz made a conscious effort to prioritize hair health by skipping unnecessary heat procedures and excessive dying. Rachel’s “nice shiny wave” came from minimal heat and intentional product selection. “Often [Morrone] would come in with damp hair, we would just rough blow-dry it a little bit, put the [Roz] milk and the oil in her hair and then put it into a loose braid to finish drying like that.”
The filming for “Something Very Bad is Going to Happen” took place amidst blizzards and heavy snowfall in the woods outside Toronto. For Lotz, this made moisturizing a heightened priority. She took a personal recommendation from Morrone with the Roz Milk Hair Serum. “Even effortless takes a little bit of effort,” Lotz says. “But healthy hair makes it a lot easier.”
On the bride’s wedding day, Lotz opted for a slightly elevated version of her regular look, using a custom hairpiece made by the Maine-based Etsy seller Silver Dawn Jewelry. “Whenever we were shooting in the bedroom, they would have that hair accessory on her little makeup stand so that it was feasible that it already existed in the world and that she didn't just randomly find it. It was something that she already had in theory that she then just quickly put into her hair for the wedding,” Lotz says.
