10 On-Screen Costumes To Recreate This Halloween
Fashion
This Halloween, skip the costumes that come in plastic packaging. Instead, step into the shoes of a character whose wardrobe tells a story.
This Halloween, we’re taking inspiration straight from the screen. Whether you want to channel the pastel chaos of Bella Baxter in “Poor Things,” the maximalism of the “KPop Demon Hunters,” or the corporate eeriness of Helly R from “Severance,” these fashion-forward costume ideas will ensure you’re the best-dressed at any Halloween party. Best of all, each look can be recreated with pieces you’ll actually want to wear again — no polyester capes or plastic props in sight.
Bella Baxter in “Poor Things”
Bella Baxter’s (Emma Stone) style in “Poor Things” is equal parts cute and chaotic, and her look is easier than ever to recreate with plenty of exaggerated silhouettes and hyper-feminine detailing dominating both runways and retailers this year. Channel Bella’s off-kilter Victoriana wardrobe with an exaggerated sleeve blouse in an offbeat pastel shade and a pair of frilly shorts for a nod to Bella’s iconic custard-yellow bloomers. As costume designer Holly Waddington, who won an Academy Award for her work on the film, has reiterated many times, the one thing that would be antithetical to Bella’s spirit would be a corset, so make sure to stay clear of anything too constraining.

1930s Mary / Vampire Mary in “Sinners”
In “Sinners,” Hailee Steinfeld's character Mary has two key looks, and either can be easily replicated. First, there are Mary’s 1930s outfits, which are all intentionally in a faded pink palette as award-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, says she wanted the character to feel almost “ghostly, opens in new tab” (it also helps that blood stands out a lot more on the pale pink silk dress Mary wears to the fateful opening night of Smoke and Stack’s juke joint). Then, in complete contrast, there is Vampire Mary’s ‘80s look, which consists of a checkerboard leather jacket and acid-wash jeans — add a flirty high ponytail and a lollipop and you’re good to go.

Rumi, Mira, and Zoey in “KPop Demon Hunters”
Netflix’s family-friendly summer hit “KPop Demon Hunters” may be animated, but the maximalist aesthetic of the characters is grounded in some of the biggest Gen-Z trends seen this year. Channel Rumi’s motorcycle chic look in a yellow vinyl jacket, layering it over a fitted white turtleneck and chunky silver jewelry. For Mira, a replica of her cropped “Won’t Miss” t-shirt can be purchased on the official Netflix shop, and paired with a yellow skirt and thigh-high boots. Lastly, recreate Zoey’s signature sporty-meets-sleek vibe with a pair of parachute pants, a cropped turquoise top, and chunky sneakers.

Lois Lane in “Superman”
Rachel Brosnahan’s modern iteration of Lois Lane is the epitome of professional chic. While her costumes for “Superman” were purposefully crafted by costume designer Judianna Makovsky to be realistic for a reporter on her feet all day, Lois’s looks are still distinctive enough to be a great Halloween costume. Recreate her go-to office outfit by layering a classic cotton t-shirt (you can’t go wrong with an Everlane box cut tee, opens in new tab) under a black vest, and pairing your preferred shade of cropped pants (any of the Colette colorways at Anthropologie , opens in new tabare perfect). Alternatively, rock her iconic all-purple outfit in a V-neck cardigan and matching corduroy pants.

Stereotypical Barbie in “Barbie”
Barbiecore may have peaked last summer, but Margot Robbie’s iconic looks from the film still reign supreme. There are the classic outfits, such as the gingham dress and the pastel pink boilersuits worn by the Barbies (you can pick up the exact style worn on set by director Greta Gerwig from Pistola, opens in new tab). But there are also a few more niche ways you can take the costume, such as recreating the outfit from the opening scene (which itself pays homage to the first ever Barbie doll) by donning a chevron-striped swimsuit and a pair of white cat-eye sunglasses. Or, you can recreate costume designer Jacqueline Durran’s iteration of Barbie-as-a-real-girl with a pair of lightwash jeans, a nude blazer, and a pair of Birkenstock Arizonas — in their pink ‘light rose’ colorway, of course.

Helly R in “Severance”
Helly R’s (Britt Lower) look in “Severance” transforms classic officewear into something quietly sinister. Her uniform of teal pencil skirts, a rotating collection of knits, and nude pumps is ripe for recreating this year, following the celebrated second season of the Apple TV show. Lower has revealed that costume designer Sarah Edwards, opens in new tab has many of her characters’ sweaters handmade and dyed for the show’s distinctive color palette, but the exact pair of nude pumps she wears is from Repetto, an Italian dance shoe brand. Helly may not be dancing through the halls of Lumon, but she certainly does a lot of running, meaning these durable but stylish shoes make perfect sense.

Beth Dutton in “Yellowstone”
For a Halloween look that makes the most of the cowboy core trend items that may already be in your closet, channel Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), the whiskey-drinking, sharp-tongued style icon of “Yellowstone.” Beth’s Western wardrobe is the blueprint for rugged femininity: think floral print dresses from ”it-girl” brands such as Reformation, Dôen, Rouje, and Réalisation Par, paired with classic cowboy boots and oversized jackets. For a different look, why not try a masculine checked shirt tucked into a denim pencil skirt — Beth’s version of power dressing, according to the series’s costume designer Johnetta Boone, opens in new tab. Finish either look with tousled hair and a don’t-mess-with-me stare.
